The Hokkaido dog (also called Hokkaido Inu or Ainu-ken) is one of Japan’s oldest and most resilient native breeds and most primitive spitz-type breeds.Originating from the northern island of Hokkaido, this powerful and loyal dog was historically raised by the indigenous Ainu people, who relied on it as a fearless hunting companion in harsh mountain and forest environments. With its thick double coat, curled tail, triangular ears, and strong, compact body, the Hokkaido dog is perfectly adapted to the cold climate of northern Japan. The breed commonly appears in striking colors such as red, sesame, black, wolf-gray, or white. Beneath its beautiful appearance lies a courageous and highly intelligent working dog known for exceptional endurance and loyalty. For centuries, the Hokkaido dog assisted hunters in tracking large game such as deer and bear through deep snow and rugged terrain. Its keen sense of direction and bravery made it invaluable in the wilderness, and many stories in northern Japan describe the breed’s remarkable ability to find its way home over long distances. Nearly lost after modernization/WWII influences but preserved as a national treasure with its own registry. In recognition of its cultural importance, the Hokkaido dog was designated a Natural Monument of Japan in 1937, placing it among the six historic Nihon Ken breeds preserved as part of the country’s living heritage.
